Background of the Study
Workplace discrimination is a significant issue that affects employees' productivity, job satisfaction, and overall mental health. Discrimination can take various forms, including bias based on gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, or socioeconomic background (Okafor & Yusuf, 2024). In Nigeria, particularly in Bauchi State, workplace discrimination remains a concern, with employees often facing unfair treatment that leads to psychological distress.
Studies indicate that discrimination in the workplace contributes to increased stress, anxiety, and depression among employees (Usman et al., 2023). Victims of discrimination often experience feelings of isolation, low self-esteem, and reduced motivation, which can negatively impact their job performance. However, there is limited research on the prevalence of workplace discrimination in Bauchi State and its effects on employees’ mental well-being. This study aims to investigate the extent of workplace discrimination in Bauchi State and its impact on employees’ psychological health.
Statement of the Problem
Employees in Bauchi State report cases of discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, and other biases, which significantly affect their mental well-being. Workplace discrimination not only reduces productivity but also contributes to mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. Despite these concerns, there is insufficient empirical research examining how discrimination impacts employees' psychological well-being in the state. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the impact of workplace discrimination on employees’ mental health and proposing strategies to promote inclusivity.
